Naaghiisyiitc' -- Sunday, Rest Day(s)

Pronunciation:

"NAH - gheese - YEECH'" (Listen)

Etymology:

Naaghiisyiitc' is the perfective (completed) form of naa(ghiis)..lyiish/yiitc', meaning "to rest." In other words naaghiisyiitc' means literally "he rested."

Culture:

Naaghiisyiitc' was used by Bill Ray as the word for "Sunday," but the Naahneesh originally had their own Rest Days. For the first four days of each month they would rest without doing any work. The chief would go around telling people "Nailyiish, nailyiish!" ("Rest, rest!").

Tomorrow (Tuesday 9/18/01) is the first day of the next month for the Naahneesh, and therefore the beginning of the four-day Naaghiisyiitc' period.
