' = glottal stop and mark of glottalization on consonants (e.g. t')

Glottal stop occurs phonetically at the beginning of most vowel-initial words, but is not normally written as this would be redundant. It is written when a vowel initial word is suffixed or compounded to another word (e.g. too'aah, dew; from too, water plus aah, cloud).
